Why Dignity Matters in the Workplace (Podcast)

In this episode of Good Morning HR, Dr. Robyn Short and Mike Coffey discuss how conflict in an organization can be fueled by the organizations’ structure; Frederick Laloux’ six organizational paradigms and their impacts on human dignity; how an organization’s respect for human dignity impacts employee engagement; whether organizations can really be run as democracies; how the workplace is one of the last places where people can build community; and the importance that leaders genuinely care about those who follow them.

Exploring Emotional Intelligence Practice: Read the article, “Leading with Emotional Intelligence,” and watch the video below presented by Ramona Hacker, and then answer the following question:

What connections can you make between our ability to be both aware of our emotions and our ability to regulate our emotions and our ability to treat our colleagues with dignity and compassion?

The ability to be aware of and regulate our emotions enhances our capacity to treat colleagues with dignity and compassion. It fosters empathy, supports effective communication, and promotes a respectful and collaborative work environment.

Congratulations! You have finished this course on social and emotional Intelligence. Share three big takeaways, two exercises that you will use to help you regulate your emotions, and the one thing you really enjoyed in this course.

Social & Emotional Intelligence Course Discussion: In module 5, you completed a conflict style assessment to determine the one or two styles you use most often. Read this article, “5 Most Effective Conflict Management Styles (+When To Use Each One).” Share one or two ideas that you found important in this article.

My biggest takeaway was the phrase "disagreements don't have to be disappointing." I feel as though I have been able to do a better job at looking for the source of conflict.

Discussion

Social & Emotional Intelligence Course Discussion: Managing yourself is all about knowing your identity, including knowing your inner critic or your saboteurs. Take the Saboteurs Assessment so you can discover your inner critic. Share what you have learned about this process in the comments.

Social & Emotional Intelligence Course Discussion: One benefit about increasing self-awareness is that it helps you recognize emotional cues. Share some cues that you know or have learned about yourself. How does having awareness about these cues support you in being an effective leader? For example, I learned a long time ago that I become emotionally activated with people who are consistently late to meetings. Knowing this allows me to intentionally self-regulate and activate curiosity.

I definitely get emotionally activated if I feel disrespected, if my opinions are not valued, even when I have more experience than other people in the meeting. I don't remember this ever happening when I was younger. Just lately I've been wondering if this may have something to do with age discrimination as I find myself almost saying things like "in my day..." I will need to pay more attention to this and learn how to let it go.

Social & Emotional Intelligence Course Discussion: Look back at your personal reflection guide from this module: What is something from your notes that you have a question around or that resonated with you? Share your thoughts in the comments.
