Elements of Dignity

Today, take some time to consider the first five elements of dignity:

Identity is our sense of our authentic self and the ability to freely live that out. It is the beautiful interweaving of things like age, gender, religion, race, class, sexual orientation, ability, family, and life experience — and our sense of having our “full package” welcomed.

Belonging is our sense that the group we embrace also embraces us. It’s expressed as shared affection, protection, and a co-commitment to thriving.

Acknowledgement is our sense of receiving another’s full attention, their listening, and their respect as we share our unique experiences and insights.

Recognition is our sense that our hard work, talent, and contribution is seen and valued. It’s an expression of being honored for playing an important role in the success of the whole.

Fairness is our sense that we are being treated in the same manner as others in our group. It’s expressed as equitable and just treatment based on agreed-upon standards.

In your journal or in the comments below, notice which of these dignity needs feels most important to you right now — either in your workplace or in yourself. Reflect on a few reasons why it seems so important.

Thank you so much for sharing your reflection, @Dr. Robyn Short , especially for describing how these elements of dignity link together and build on each other. I can viscerally feel the impact on a learning environment!
