Course Description

Performance Management Training for Managers: How to Hold People Accountable with Dignity Most of us were trained to believe that holding people accountable and treating them well are two settings on the same dial — that being firm costs warmth and being kind costs standards. It isn't true, and the research says so. This course is built on Dr. Robyn Short's research that finds that performance management systems fail when they are misaligned with basic human needs and that people contribute at their highest level when their voice is genuinely heard, their identity is fully embraced, they are trusted to act autonomously, and their contributions are acknowledged specifically rather than generically. In this course, you'll learn to set expectations people can actually meet, give feedback that tells the truth without diminishing anyone, hold the conversation you've been avoiding, document and escalate without stripping someone's dignity, and see where your own performance process is producing the problems you keep managing. This course is delivered in seven self-paced, asynchronous modules. The course should take about six hours. Learners will get the most out of this course if they spread the learning out over seven to eight weeks. Each module includes a video presentation with Dr. Short, a written lesson, a five-question quiz, and two written reflections that your engagement manager reads and responds to. Five modules ask you to script a real conversation in your own words, and one asks you to actually have it. Who this course is for This course is for anyone who manages people and holds performance conversations — new managers, experienced managers who've never been taught this properly, and HR professionals who coach managers through it. No prerequisite. Certificate criteria Pass all seven quizzes with 80% or higher and submit all fourteen reflections. Instructor: Dr. Robyn Short
